When tumor cells and foreign agents grow in various organs of the body, our immune system has natural mechanisms to combat them. However, the question arises: how can we accelerate this process, enhance its energy, and make it more effective?

A team of scientists in Chile, led by Maroun Khoury, director of the IMPACT Center of Excellence at Universidad de los Andes, claims to have found an innovative solution. The researchers discovered that transferring mitochondria —the energy-producing organelles in cells— from mesenchymal stem cells to T cells can significantly increase their capacity to fight cancer.

“It’s like turning a standard sedan into a race car. These cells, called ‘Mito-CAR-T,’ not only achieve greater survival rates but are equipped for peak performance, allowing them to execute a more efficient attack on cancer cells,” Khoury explained.

This breakthrough offers new hope for patients, marking a significant milestone in the development of more effective cancer treatments.
