Preventing Cancer: From Condemnation to Opportunity

By Dr. Claudia Gamargo, Director of the RedSalud Cancer Institute

Cancer has become the leading cause of death in Chile, predominantly affecting the prostate in men and the breast in women. Despite its high incidence, many people still perceive it as a distant disease associated with old age, creating a false sense of security.

However, in recent decades, cases among people under 50 have increased significantly. Factors such as the consumption of processed foods high in fats and sugars, alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking are contributing to this rising trend.

Given this reality, prevention and early detection emerge as the best strategies to combat the disease. Cancer does not have to be a death sentence if diagnosed in time. Early detection tests allow for timely treatments that significantly improve life expectancy and reduce the emotional and economic burden on patients and their families.

From a public health perspective, it is crucial to promote access to and dissemination of clear information about the benefits and guarantees available for conducting these tests, as well as GES coverage for complex treatments.

Fostering a culture of prevention and self-care is essential to building a sustainable healthcare system focused on ensuring a healthier population. The responsibility for maintaining a good quality of life lies with each of us and the availability of accessible tools to achieve it.
